District Diversity Council Action Plan

The Closter school community came together during the 2019–2020 school year to establish core value statements for our district.

One of the critical values we embraced is the importance of diversity and our commitment to fostering a positive environment that upholds fairness, inclusivity, dignity, and respect for everyone. Building on this foundation, our board of education aimed to enhance inclusivity and equity in Closter Public Schools by forming a District Diversity Council to address crucial diversity and equity issues within our community.

Following multiple meetings throughout the 2019–2020 school year, the council developed an action plan for the 2021–2022 academic year.

In the 2021–2022 school year, the council furthered its efforts by creating subcommittees focusing on curriculum, student programs, professional development for staff, staff recruitment, and communication surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion. The District Diversity Council generated an action plan for the 2022–2023 academic year.

The initiatives developed by the District Diversity Council have yielded outcomes that are continuing today. Their initial work has been extended through school-wide programs to highlight cultural awareness month observances, integrate diversity into age-appropriate reading and social studies lessons, and celebrate “Choose to Include” week at both schools. These endeavors are designed to bolster our school climate by encouraging respect, acceptance, dignity, and friendship among all students.

We are proud of our work toward recognizing and celebrating the diversity of Closter!
