                                  Overview of Child Study Team Responsibilities


The Director of Special Services leads the Child Study Team, and it is comprised of a Psychologist, Learning Disabilities Teacher/Consultants, Social Workers and Speech / Language Specialists. These professional educators collaborate with principals, assistant principals,teachers, nurses, guidance counselors, and parents to provide intervention,consultation, identification, and evaluation for any student who potentially may have a learning difference. Additionally, the members of the team serve as case managers who coordinate the evaluation process as well as the implementation of an Individualized Education Program(IEP) for all students who are determined to be eligible for special education and/or related services.

 Any child between the ages of three and five and in Kindergarten through Grade Eight whose parents are legal residents of Closter is a potential candidate for services. These services are for students with special needs which may include delayed and/or deficient speech and language development, significant delays/difficulties in academic achievement and cognitive development, emotional or social problems, physical (orthopedic,visual or hearing) impairments - or chronic illness.   

 The identification process of students in Kindergarten through Grade 8 can be initiated by a parent or a physician but most often it is the child’s teacher who initially shows concern about the lack of progress and informs the parent and the principal. The school, in collaboration with parents, may then seek to ameliorate the student’s difficulties through strategic interventions offered by the Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS) Team (formerly known as the Pupil Assistance Committee/PAC).  If the strategic interventions of the I&RS do not prove to be helpful, the child's concerns may be brought to the attention of the Child Study Team.

A child between the age of 2½ and 5 can also be evaluated by the Child Study Team to determine eligibility.  Parents are encouraged to contact the Child Study Team office to request further information at 201.768.3860.
 
When a student is referred to the Child Study Team,  the student’s records and current levels of performance are reviewed, and concerns from teachers and parents are shared at a planning meeting. A determination is made  whether or not an evaluation is warranted. If so, the parents' written consent to evaluate will be obtained. Members of the Child Study Team conduct individual evaluations based on their specialties. A written report is prepared and sent to the parent/guardian in advance of the eligibility meeting held to discuss all of the evaluation and to review recommendations of the Child Study Team. If a student is found eligible for special education and related services, an Individual Education Plan (IEP) will be developed and implemented with parental consent. The Individual Education Plan (IEP) addresses a student’s specific needs, including specialized instruction and recommended placement.
